Chemical formulas

This site aims to help you find out information on the chemical formula of many common chemicals and household substances. Chemical symbols from the periodic table are used for the individual elements. eg. H for hydrogen, O for oxygen and N for nitrogen. These symbols are used to construct the chemical formula of a substance. Eg. water, H2O and ammonia, NH3

There are many different types of chemical formula. The formula may be empirical, molecular, condensed structural or complete structural formula.

The molecular formula tells us the number and the type of atoms in a chemical element. The molecular chemical formula for glucose is C6H12O6, sucrose is C112H22O6 and octane is C8H18

The empirical formula is the simplest whole number ratio of the elements in a compound. For example, the molecular formula of hydrogen peroxide is H2O2 its empirical formula is HO. Like wise the molecular formula for octane is C8H18 and its empirical formula is C4H9.

The structural formula tells us atoms are arranged in a molecule. This formula may complete or condensed. See vinegar as an example.

A game of chemical bingo will be put up on the site to help students to learn the basic symbols and oxidation numbers of the most common ions.

Chemical Information Services Adds MSDS to Portfolio

Chemical Information Services has partnered with IHS Dolphin to bring MSDS to its subscribers. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance.

This essential source of chemical safety information offers users the following capabilities and features:

• Searchable by product name and company name
• Access to database of more than 600,000 unique chemicals
• Over 1 million MSDS available
• More than 10,000 quarterly updates provide the most current data available

During the introductory period, the feature is complimentary to all users. It will soon join the rest of Chemical Information Services Internet-based products and be available on a subscription only basis.

A complimentary webinar entitled "MSDS – What, Why and How" will be presented on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. For additional information, please go to www.chemicalinfo.com and visit the Webinars section of the site.

Dow Chemical Reviews Its Green Tech Initiatives with VP Joe Biden

The Dow Chemical Company recently hosted a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden at its Midland, Michigan headquarters. During the event, Dow highlighted several of its major green tech initiatives that concentrate on the global need for alternative energy production and storage. Dow has already realized $750 million in federal and state economic incentives and has applied them to these initiatives. In addition to producing breakthrough technologies and new manufacturing facilities, the company's projects have generated thousands of jobs, making mid-Michigan a green tech hub.

One of the many projects featured during the event was the new DOW™ POWERHOUSE™ Solar Shingles. This innovative product incorporates
low-cost, thin-film CIGS photovoltaic cells into a proprietary roofing shingle design, which represents a multi-functional solar energy generating roofing product. This pioneering design results in reduced installation costs, thanks to simultaneous installation of both conventional roofing shingles and solar generating shingles. No specialized skill or knowledge of solar array installations is required on the part of the roofing contractor. Dow's breakthrough diesel particulate filters were also showcased. The company's diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology helps reduce soot emissions, and promote exceptional fuel efficiency and performance from diesel engines.

In addition to displaying some fuel efficiency and performance benefits of its recent innovations, Dow's green tech programs also show the positive
results achieved when government and industry work together. By utilizing its unique position in the industry and its association with nearly every
economic sector, Dow developed an Advanced Manufacturing Plan. This plan's focus is on lowering structural costs which are currently stifling U.S. manufacturing. It establishes broad policy framework that will encourage economic growth while also considering a multitude of issues ranging from climate change to education to tax reform. The company believes that such pro-manufacturing policies will enable companies to create more high-paying jobs. Vice President Biden's visit coincided with a groundbreaking ceremony for a facility that will manufacture lithium-ion battery packs for hybrid and electric vehicles. His appearance is part of a six-week, nationwide focus on economic Recovery Act infrastructure projects. The facility is part of a joint venture between Dow and TK Advanced Battery, LLC. It is being built by Dow Kokam, and will employ more than 800 people and have the capacity to manufacture 1.3 billion watt hours of large format, affordable, lithium-ion batteries.

To continue driving innovation and economic re-investment, Dow will also continue with its record investments in research and development (R&D).
In 2010, the company is investing $1.6 billion in R&D, which is more than the combined R&D budgets of every university chemistry department in the United States.

Italian Media Begin Strike to Protest Berlusconi's `Gag Law' on Wiretaps

Italian media began a strike to protest Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's bill to limit news coverage of criminal probes that involve police wiretaps.

Print reporters won't show up to work today, meaning no papers will be on sale July 9, while news agencies along with television, radio and Internet staff will abstain tomorrow for a "day of silence," journalists' union FNSI said yesterday.

Berlusconi argues that pervasive leaks of wiretaps in Italy, one of the most bugged countries in Europe, leads to people being tried in the press. Police, prosecutors, journalists, publishers and opposition parties say the law goes too far and would hinder investigations and the media's freedom to report on issues of public interest.

The draft legislation, dubbed the "gag law" by its critics, was passed in the Senate earlier this month and debate begins in the Chamber of Deputies on July 29. Berlusconi had hoped to turn the bill into law before parliament breaks up in August for the summer recess.

If passed, the law would make it harder for prosecutors to get wiretaps approved and limit them to 75 days from as much as 18 months currently. Journalists would risk jail time and publishers could be fined as much as 465,000 euros ($588,000) for reporting the content of wiretaps.

Chemical Industry Weekly News Round-Up

ACC's annual meeting took place this week in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In a time of growing public mistrust of large institutions and corporations of all stripes, the chemical industry must work to gain public trust, Eastman Chemical CEO Brian Ferguson told attendees. More positively, executives have been pleasantly surprised with the economic recovery so far.

Pemex named BASF in lawsuit claiming that the world's largest chemical company purchased natural gas liquids from thieves. BASF says it did not knowingly buy the stolen gas.

The U.S. Senate rejected the Murkowski climate resolution, which would have halted EPA's greenhouse gas regulatory process. The resolution was supported by a coalition of industry groups, including NPRA. The coalition, somewhat surprisingly, did not include ACC.

Echoing sentiments at the ACC meeting, delegates at Chemspec in Berlin are optimistic about the outlook for specialty chemicals.

SAFC is back in a growth phase, too. Video below.

U.S. retail sales fell 1.2% in May, the largest drop in eight months. The drop was largely attributable to construction materials, though it has contributed to worries about the economic recovery, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Apparently the U.S. public does believe in climate change after all: that's the result of a new poll, discussed in a New York Times op-ed, that says some-three quarters of Americans accept the idea of human-cased global warming. Americans are still opposed to more taxes on gasoline and electricity, though.

Business Insider has 15 facts on China that, it claims, will "blow your mind." Apparently New York's famously pricey real estate has nothing on Beijing, so consider my mind blown.

thinners. It exhibits high dilution ratios with both aromatic
and aliphatic diluents and is the least toxic of
industrial organic solvents.
Pharmaceuticals: Ethyl acetate is an important component
in extractants for the concentration and purification
of antibiotics. It is also used as an intermediate
in the manufacture of various drugs.
